In this sequel to AlphaOops! The Day Z Went First (Candlewick, 2006), Kontis and Kolar reintroduce readers to their cast of alphabet players. The book begins with the letter Z directing the letter H to start the show because, “Halloween can't start with any other letter.” Appearing entirely out of sequence, the individual letters then make brief appearances dressed up as characters that begin with their respective letters: “Z is for zombie. N is for nightmare.” The tentative letter B attempts to shine, but he continually encounters problems; at one point his buccaneer costume is taken by P (Pirate) and in another scene a blackbird sits on his head. B perseveres and steals the show by delivering the final line of the play, “B is for…BOO!” Kontis's text is rhythmic and comical, and readers who are comfortable with the alphabet will delight in the silliness of this story. Having packed his Martian Space Pilot costume in his bag, Gilbert, the hedgehog introduced in Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink (Morrow, 1996), trots off to school for a holiday parade and party. Imagine his dismay when he discovers that he has taken his sister Lola's sack and her pink ballerina outfit by mistake. As five of his classmates also decided to be Martian Space Pilots, it's not an unmitigated disaster so he squeezes into the tutu and toughs it out, encountering surprise but not a trace of derision from his peers. Well, it could happen. De Groat moves her human-proportioned animal cast between a comfortable suburban neighborhood dotted with colorful autumn leaves and a school restroom where the boys change clothes. However skeptical they may be of the mild reaction to Gilbert's costume, young viewers will enjoy the glimpses of loudly colored underwear (plus, for many girls, exotic bathroom plumbing). Despite severely undersized tights, Gilbert isn't made to look all that ludicrous or uncomfortable. Although Lola reclaims her costume for the evening's trick-or-treating, she and her brother at least tinker with gender stereotypes, and that may plant seeds in some readers' minds. Sure to be popular due to the success of the new PBS television series, these new additions to the series demonstrate the vocal talent of author/illustrator Marc Brown. Arthur's creator reads the texts, giving each character a distinctive voice. He is able to portray the females, like mother and D.W., while avoiding stereotypical high, squeaky voices. The production values on the recordings are excellent, with background music and helpful sound effects. The slamming of car doors, the sound of rain or footsteps, and other sound effects give the tapes the quality of old radio shows. Each tape opens with the theme song, "Say Hello to Arthur." Both sides of each tape are the same except for the page-turning signal bell on one side. In Arthur's Family Vacation, rain ruins the family's stay at the beach until Arthur thinks of activities they can do. In Arthur's Halloween, Arthur and D.W. learn you can't presume a house is haunted just because the outside looks run down. The artwork in each children's book features Brown's customary cartoon-like ink and watercolor illustrations that add humor to the stories. The tapes work well even without the kids books. Trick or Treat: A Peanuts Halloween

I will admit to being a somewhat casual reader of comic strips. I have a few favorites I follow regularly, but around the holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is really when I sit down and read a lot of newspaper strips. I guess I just love seeing how they celebrate the holidays and their usually quite funny. This collection of Peanuts strips is all about Halloween as Charlie and the gang go trick-or-treating, have parties, and dress up for the season. It is not a complete collection of all of Schulz strips to be sure, but it is a nice, representative gathering of material culled from over the years. also included throughout is mostly forgettable tips for throwing parties, decorating, and recipes. None of it worth much and I would have preferred to see more comics and some in color as opposed to that stuff. all in all a nice collection. I highly recommend this children's book, especially for any die-hard Peanuts fan. It was wonderful to see how Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang changed over time. And I happen to like Schulz's humor better when he first started writing and drawing; it was more childlike. The comics are Halloween and monster themed and some of them are hilarious, ones I have not seen in a long time. Of course there is lots about "The Great Pumpkin" but how could it be coming Halloween and Linus does not mention him! Read it and enjoy. Good old fashioned comics and humor!
