Children will immediately identify with Oscar, a little "wiener" dog with many of his own problems. Because of his unusual shape and size, the rest of the dog and cat community often teases Oscar. To make matters enen worse, Oscar's mother surprises him with a homemade Halloween costume. The hot dog costume, complete with mustard and a bun, is not exactly what Oscar had in mind. Not wanting to hurt his mother's feelings, Oscar decides to wear the costume, even though he knows the reaction it will evoke from his friends. Burdened by the size of his costume, Oscar tries to trick-or-treat with his friends despite incessant teasing and hounds who take all the treats before Oscar can make it to the houses. Oscar feels that all is lost. Suddenly, a ghastly monster appears and frightens the dogs so much that they jump into a nearby pond to hide. Because of his short stature, Oscar is able to discover the true identity of the monster and expose it as a couple of ornery cats. Oscar rescues his friends and becomes a hero. The colorful illustrations and rich language compliment this hilarious tale. Readers will cheer for Oscar as he goes from a "Wiener Dog" to a "Hero Sandwich." Well, after a week of pondering and rejecting a variety of costumes, Froggy decides to become a Frog Prince. He really looks cute and Frogilina finds him irresistible. After a narrow escape from his amorous pursuer, Froggy finishes up his trick-or-treating, but when he gets home he finds that his sword has cut a hole in his bag and it is empty. Every year I look forward to the next Tom Nardone masterpiece. The stuff he does with pumpkins is inspiring. Pumpkins with flames coming out of them. Pumpkins in chains that form archways. Pumpkins that create giant insects. Pumpkins that form the weird heads on fake corpses. Anything one might imagine and lots that we never could without Tom Nardone. So funny. So grotesque. This Halloween book is an expanded one that has suggestions for costumes-pranks-party food-creatures, and of course, Pumpkins! What would Halloween be without 'em? Or, without the genius of Tom Nardone? Highly recommended. This Halloween book is for the older kids. Teens will have fun with this exciting Halloween book. Leave us your comments. This is ghostly trick or treat fun for tiny tots. The tiny ghost discovers that haunting is very hard, especially for a ghost who is scared. The secrets of his heritage seem out of his grasp until one Halloween night when he is motivated to be a protector of his cats and his home. The pictures of the tiny ghost trying out his scary voice, frightening himself and then puffing himself up to look scary are a hoot. Audience participation for sound effects makes this a crowd pleaser. This is a great Halloween children's book for kids ages 4-8.

Sure to be popular due to the success of the new PBS television series, these new additions to the series demonstrate the vocal talent of author/illustrator Marc Brown. Arthur's creator reads the texts, giving each character a distinctive voice. He is able to portray the females, like mother and D.W., while avoiding stereotypical high, squeaky voices. The production values on the recordings are excellent, with background music and helpful sound effects. The slamming of car doors, the sound of rain or footsteps, and other sound effects give the tapes the quality of old radio shows. Each tape opens with the theme song, "Say Hello to Arthur." Both sides of each tape are the same except for the page-turning signal bell on one side. In Arthur's Family Vacation, rain ruins the family's stay at the beach until Arthur thinks of activities they can do. In Arthur's Halloween, Arthur and D.W. learn you can't presume a house is haunted just because the outside looks run down. The artwork in each children's book features Brown's customary cartoon-like ink and watercolor illustrations that add humor to the stories. The tapes work well even without the kids books. Trick or Treat: A Peanuts Halloween

I will admit to being a somewhat casual reader of comic strips. I have a few favorites I follow regularly, but around the holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is really when I sit down and read a lot of newspaper strips. I guess I just love seeing how they celebrate the holidays and their usually quite funny. This collection of Peanuts strips is all about Halloween as Charlie and the gang go trick-or-treating, have parties, and dress up for the season. It is not a complete collection of all of Schulz strips to be sure, but it is a nice, representative gathering of material culled from over the years. also included throughout is mostly forgettable tips for throwing parties, decorating, and recipes. None of it worth much and I would have preferred to see more comics and some in color as opposed to that stuff. all in all a nice collection. I highly recommend this children's book, especially for any die-hard Peanuts fan. It was wonderful to see how Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang changed over time. And I happen to like Schulz's humor better when he first started writing and drawing; it was more childlike. The comics are Halloween and monster themed and some of them are hilarious, ones I have not seen in a long time. Of course there is lots about "The Great Pumpkin" but how could it be coming Halloween and Linus does not mention him! Read it and enjoy. Good old fashioned comics and humor! This Halloween kids book is for children reading levels ages 4-8.

A Not Scary Story About Big Scary Things

A boy lives near a regular, ordinary, standard kind of forest, except that along with the usual perils of cliffs, bears, snakes, and wolves, there is also an actual, awful monster with a habit for scaring children. That is what people said, anyway. But the boy isn't believing it and his belief proves to be a powerful defense when he finds himself standing toe to toe with the monster, who seems to live up to its horrible tale. I'm sorry, the boy says politely, but I can't believe in something that's not real. Confused by this precocious rationality, the monster slowly shrinks, until it becomes nothing more than a fluffy little kitty, suitable for adopting. It is hard to think of two artists better suited to one another. Sharing a surreal sense of logic and elegance, Williams and Swiatkowska convey a mood that is both dreamy and reassuringly matter of fact. Swiatkowska is in particularly fine form, with wry drawings that range from florid to schematic and clever collages that underscore the silliness of conventional wisdom. Ages 3–7.
